FLUX’s print head is modular, so you can swap in whatever type of function you’d like. The company said food and ceramic 3D printing are in the works.
Fuel3D is prepping to release its relatively inexpensive consumer 3D scanner next year after raising $6.4 million in a second Series A round. Investors contributed $2.6 million in the first round in February. On top of increasing production, Fuel3D will use the money to expand into commercial applications such as biometrics and eyewear. The startup recently started shipping its first units to Kickstarter backers, who were originally scheduled to receive them in April. 3D scanners are of particular interest to 3D printer owners, who can use them to scan physical objects and then print a replica.
Google is bringing its Project Tango technology to 7-inch tablets where the slates will have dual cameras and multiple sensors to “see” the world around them. The hardware part is easy. Creating compelling software for Project Tango is the bigger challenge.
I had some troubles creating a design in a computer aided design program, so I decided to try a program that generates a design from reality. It went OK.
Most 3D printers have one nozzle that lays down layers of plastic. Radiant Fabrication’s two new printers have four and eight.
The Zeus integrates a 3D printer and scanner into one device; an inevitable combination. It’s the brainchild of two USC computer science PhD students.
The Scan-to-Print web app uses a depth camera to create digital models that are compatible with 3D printers.
As 3D printer prices keep dropping, I’m interested. But, I have zero experience with design software. Photon, a relatively low-priced 3D scanner, might be just the right solution: With a laser, it scans objects in 3 minutes and creates the software design automatically.
