Why does the paywall debate always have to become a religious war?

It seems that no discussion of the merits or weaknesses of newspaper paywalls is complete unless one side accuses the other of having virtually nothing intelligent to say on the topic. Is there no common ground at all between paywall advocates and paywall skeptics?

What Does the Future Hold for Newspapers?

Last year was the worst year since 1986 for newspaper ad revenues (unless you use inflation-adjusted numbers, in which case it was the worst since 1963). Some papers are looking to pay walls as a solution, while others are hoping the Apple iPad will save them.
