Another big-five publisher is seeing the value of ebook subscription models: Simon & Schuster is making its entire backlist of about 10,000 titles available on Scribd and Oyster. Conveniently, S&S author Stephen King is the #1 most-searched author on both services.
Ebook subscription service Oyster has added about 100 titles from Disney and is breaking out a separate children’s section. But most of those books are text-based, not illustrated.
Smashwords authors who make their ebooks available through ebook subscription service Oyster will get 60 percent of their book’s list price if an Oyster user reads at least 10 percent of it.
“Netflix for ebooks” Oyster launched on iPad and opened up to everybody Wednesday; previously it had only been available on iPhone. Rival service Scribd also released some stats showing that most of its use is coming from iPad.
