UBS telecom analyst John Hodulik has identified several trends that show T-Mobile and Sprint are gaining the upper hand on AT&T and Verizon. It’s still early, but we could be witnessing a competitive renaissance.
A regulatory filing shows Dish invested in $396 million in an unnamed company. Analysts believe that company is Clearwire and that dish could be preparing to partner with the ailing WiMAX provider to build its new LTE network — that is if gets permission to build.
AT&T’s current 4G spectrum holdings are all over the place, but if it can execute its grand plan for the Wireless Communications Services airwaves it will have a consistent nationwide 20 MHz band designated solely for LTE. It just has to pull it off.
UBS believes the new iPad will be the catalyst that drives consumers to connect their tablets to mobile broadband networks. UBS predicted there would be a near 50/50 split between Wi-Fi-only and 4G iPads sold, driven by the demand for fast LTE connectivity in the U.S.
