Google Labs Gets to Work

Those of us with @gmail.com email addresses or an email account through Google Apps have had some fun playing with the new experimental features through Gmail Labs. From the silly Mail Goggles to the more helpful ability to add a calendar to the sidebar or set an end date on vacation reminders, the Labs-in-email thing has mostly been aimed at the everyday user.
Now Google is getting serious by bringing the Labs concept to Google Apps. They’re starting with just 3 Labs add-ins. Google says they’re hoping 3rd party developers will get involved. Unlike the email Labs, these features must be added by your Google Apps Administrator. Usefulness depends on your organization/company needs. And remember, Google uses the “experimental” label to mean “use at your own risk.”

Ztail, online listings made easy

It has been a weekend of relative quiet and peace – where most of the time was spent cleaning up the apartment, and discovering that I had more digital device clutter than any sane person should have. In other words, time to head on over to eBay and list some old stuff to make room for the new gee-gaws. Apparently I am not alone: a recent survey released by eBay shows that the average US household has approximately $3,000 of unused things in their home

Call is serendipity, but right after watching Roger Clemens right the New York Yankees’ ship, I met with Bill Hudak, cofounder and CEO of Palo Alto, Calif.-based Ztail, that has come up with web service that allows you to easily create “classifieds” and then publish them to not only eBay, but to other sites such as Edgeio, Facebook, MySpace, TypePad and WordPress blogs, and of course the Ztail listings site.

Times Reader: too heavy a price for mobile reading?

Times_readerAll good things must come to end I suppose. The next one is the free usage of the Times Reader, that wonderful app that brings the New York Times to your mobile device. Forbes mentions that the Times will begin to charge for the content after the beta expires on March 27th. Expect to pay $14.95 a month or $165 for a full-year of the NYT; there is no charge for home-subscribers. I was hoping the advertisements in the content would cover the costs and even make money for the Times, but those hopes were just dashed. Why not a $5 monthly subscription option that provides the content several hours after the print and full-price customers receive it? Bummer….
