Today in Cloud

Yesterday, the Ubuntu project announced that “future versions of Ubuntu Cloud will use OpenStack as a foundation technology,” apparently marking the beginning of the end for Ubuntu’s relationship with Eucalyptus. Customers already using the older open source cloud infrastructure offering will be supported for the next few years, but it seems clear that the Ubuntu community is accelerating its embrace of OpenStack. Eucalyptus started strongly, and remains a compelling and viable product, but it has consistently failed to generate the same levels of buzz and community buy-in as OpenStack. It is currently unclear where Eucalyptus — and the commercial Eucalyptus Systems — go from here.
