Movie streaming platform Popcornflix announced 400,000 downloads on Roku today, which puts it right behind the big guys, Amazon, Hulu and Netflix. Popcornflix may not have the biggest blockbusters in its catalog, but it has something else going for it. The price is right: free.
Film distributor Screen Media Ventures is launching Popcornflix.com, a website that will let indie film fans watch hundreds of movies for free, in an ad-supported format. But can movies with ads bring in as much money as licensing to Netflix or renting through iTunes?
