Google has released its top search terms in renewable energy and sustainability for 2011. There were some expected top search terms like “solar” and “wind power,” two of the top three spots in the alternative energy category. Although under the environment category, “What is LED” and “What is fracking?” came in #5 and #8 respectively, a sign that consumers are trying to figure out what all these new light bulbs mean as well as what the fuss is about all this new natural gas drilling. Perhaps most interesting for Green IT was that the #2 search term in the “waste disposal” category, after “garbage island,” was “e-waste recycling.” Apparently with the glut of used electronic devices, consumers really are asking what they should do with that old desktop aside from just dumping it in the trash.
