Apple’s “There’s An App for That” Trademark on the Books

Apple (s aapl) originally applied for a trademark registration certificate for the now-ubiquitous marketing phrase “There’s an app for that” in December of 2009. In that filing, the company claimed the phrase’s first use was on Jan. 26 2009. That certificate has finally been awarded.

The guy from Apple’s (s aapl) “There’s an App for That” series of commercials does a fine, upstanding job, don’t get me wrong. He’s a credit to his profession, in fact, and has become iconically associated with one of the most successful products ever released. But he’s seriously ruining Christmas.

A new Apple ad in the series features an app-centric take on the classic “12 Days of Christmas” holiday carol, as rendered with uncompromising unmusicality by the voice that smugly informs us about everything there’s an app for. The apps don’t correspond to the actual items described in the original tune, but instead highlight various holiday-time activities. Here Are More Apps for That: Three New iPhone Commercials From Apple

app_adsIt’s fall premiere season, and that means new shows. But it also means sparkly new ads to fill all those commercial breaks. New Apple (s aapl) ads for the iPhone provided pleasant relief for me yesterday from the tedium of the two-hour Heroes premiere. On a side note, the Castle premiere was pretty good.
